Artist Statement: I have been making non-objective forms for over a decade. Typically, I work with three main elements; geometric form with organic surface texture and graphic symbols as surface decoration. The marriage of geometric, organic, and graphic has become a language that evokes primal and visceral associations. Usually I present my work in a vertical orientation. For Bonsai inSites a horizontal presentation seemed most appropriate. "Large Cairn for Boxwood" is divided graphically and is similar to an eroded, barren landscape. The placement of the bonsai tree, isolated within its surroundings, becomes an oasis. The bonsai is enveloped within the larger landscape, a non-traditional sense of scale for bonsai and container, but intended to draw the viewer into the miniature environment.
