Artist Statement: The invitation to curate this exhibition for Baltimore Clayworks has allowed me to bring together my two artistic passions- Ceramics and Bonsai. In much of my sculpture, architectural space plays an important role. I enjoy setting a stage, creating a construct within a carefully delineated space for some psychological or emotional scenario to play out. For Bonsai inSites, I put together a group or copse of Kingsville Boxwoods to create the setting for Surreal Estate. Here is a mindscape, a private retreat, fortified against every intrusion. Buttressed from telemarketers and e-everything. Set apart and away from meetings and deadlines, this is a place of Reverie. Utopianism? Escapism? Not necessarily, but most interestingly, it does happen to be a place without a trace of Cynicism. It represents bonsai itself.
