Catalog Foreword

Curator's Statement

My intention for Bonsai inSites is to activate the dialogue between bonsai and container, between the tree and the site or situation in which it is perceived.

Open Letter to Participants

August 2001

Dear Bonsai inSites Participants,

This website is intended to introduce you to one another through a small sampling of your work. The ceramic works pictured will give the bonsai artists a glimpse into the style and quality of the clay artists more typical work. These might serve as a benchmark indication as to how these artists approach the challenge of creating a site for a living tree. The Bonsai pictured in these pages are the trees that the Potomac Bonsai Association members have made available for this exhibition. Click on any thumbnail image to see a larger image. For each Bonsai you will also see a front and side view. The dimensions of the tree and the dimensions of it's current container are adjacent to the image. Please note: This container area is the minimum planting area the ceramic artist will need to provide for that tree in their sculpture/container. Please notify me when you have found a tree that you would like to work with. I will note on the web site that the tree has been selected.

Additional tree images will be posted as I receive them from the bonsai artists. So check weekly if you have not found a tree to work with. If you have a different tree style or size in mind other than those currently displayed, please let me know and I can see if I can come up with something. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions at all. I would really like to hear from you about your plans for this project!

Thanks sincerely for your participation!

Ron Lang
